Saraswati is usually depicted sitting on a lotus in an artistic pose. She plays a one stringed lute , holds a rosary and a book. Sometimes her hands are depicted in Abhaya - mudra which is a protection gesture. Saraswati came to be honored as the divine force underlying ritual chants, the " tongue " of the sacrificial fire that conveys human communications to the gods and goddesses.
